As someone who has struggled with finding the right hairstyle for my face shape, I know firsthand how frustrating it can be. That's why I decided to create this guide to help you determine your face shape and find the perfect hairstyle to flatter your features.
Determining your face shape
Before we dive into the best hairstyles for different face shapes, let's first determine your own. Stand in front of a mirror and take note of the following points: the top center of your forehead, the tip of your chin, the corners of your forehead, where your cheekbones end, and where your jaw makes a corner on each side.
These eight points make up four lines: the vertical center, the horizontal center, the forehead line, and the jaw line.
Your face shape is determined by the proportions of these lines.
There are six main face shapes.
If you're not sure which one you have, don't worry. I'll go over each one in detail.
OVAL
SQUARE
ROUND
HEART
DIAMOND
LONG
Oval face shape
Considered to be very harmonious to the eye, the oval face shape is similar in size and shape on the top and bottom halves of the face. Lucky for you, if you have an oval face, you can sport almost any hairstyle! Long or short, curly or straight, the choice is yours.
Square face shape
If you have a square face shape, your forehead line and jaw line are of similar lengths, and the center vertical and horizontal lines are also similar. To visually correct a square face shape, avoid haircuts that have chin length and instead go for longer hair. Shoulder length or even longer will help to elongate the face and make it look narrower. If your issue is with the upper part of your face and you feel like your forehead is too wide, try bangs that are split on one side to break up the square visually.
Round face shape
A round face shape is almost like a square, except that the spot from one corner of the jaw through the chin to the other one is almost like a perfect half circle. To avoid making a round face shape look rounder, avoid bob haircuts and styling that makes the hair go inward. Instead, curl your hair outward with layers and split your bangs in the middle to break up the circle.
Heart face shape
A heart face shape has a larger forehead line than the jaw line and often a pointy chin. If that's your face shape, you can go with hairstyles shorter than the chin and even go short as you want because the chin is a part that you probably would like to show. Style with layers going inward.
Diamond face shape
An almost heart shape to which we cut off the corners of the forehead, a diamond face shape has the largest part in the center line. Add volume to the top of your head, and asymmetrically split bangs is also a good solution for you because it visually makes your center line look longer.
Long face shape
A long face shape is when you take an oval and stretch it vertically to make the vertical center line appear even longer. Try to shorten your vertical center line by adding thick bangs in the middle. Avoid wearing your hair very long, very sleek, and without layers next to your face because it will look like it's stretching the face out even more.
Styling tips
Once you've determined your face shape, it's time to find the perfect hairstyle to flatter your features. But keep in mind that the principles behind choosing the right hairstyle are not just about finding the right cut. It's also about deciding which parts of your face to highlight or hide to create the perfect look for you.
For example, if you have a round face, you can visually correct that by curling your hair outward with layers and splitting your bangs in the middle to break up the circle.
And if you want to take it to the next level, makeup can help enhance your features and even change the appearance of your face shape!
